The Cameroon fruits and vegetable market caters, both, domestic and commercial purposes. According to FAO, total vegetable accounts for 2.8 million metric tons and fruit production accounts for 5.8 million metric tons in 2018. Cassava was the most produced crops in Cameroon, with a production of 5.03 million metric tons in 2018 followed by plantains with the production of 3.9 million metric tons. Increasing production of fruits & vegetables is due to steady increase in acreage under production. Increasing production leading to higher exports is driving the friuts and vegetables market in cameroon.

Plantains and Banana are the Major Fruits of Cameroon

According to FAO, Plantains and Banana are the most cultivated fruits crop in Cameroon with lead production of 3.9 million metric tons and 1.2 million metric tons respectively in 2018. Followed by pineapple avacado and watermelon. With the increasing consumption rate and demand from both, domestic and commercial markets coupled with the improvement in cultivation techniques, along with new and improved varieties are anticipated to bump up the production rate which in turn will boost the fruit market in Cameroon during the forecast period.

Growing Export Opportunity

According to ITC Trade, the export of fruits accounted for USD 63,532 thousand USD in 2017. Among fruits, banana is the major fruit exported followed by dates, figs, pineapples. Due to improvement in cultivation techniques in banana cultivation which helps to increase the production of bananas is driving the export which in turn will boost the market during the forecast period. The major export destinations for the Cameroon fruits are countries like Belgium and France holding a share of 44.1 and 21.5 respectively, accounting for 65.6% of the total fruits exported in 2017.
