[Report Description]

The market for biopesticides in Brazil is estimated to register a CAGR of 10.3%, during the forecast period.

- One of the major drivers for the biopesticide market in Brazil has been the increasing demand for organically grown produce as a result of changing dietary preferences amongst the consumers. It has been estimated that almost 70% of the domestically grown food consumed is highly contaminated with pesticide residues. As a result, the growing demand for ecologically-safe produce has been ramping up the demand for bio-based pesticides in the market.
- The market for biopesticides is fragmented with a multitude of players intensifying the competition for a substantial market share and foothold in the Brazilian industry. Some of the major players in the country include Marrone Bio Innovations, Valent Biosciences Corporation, Koppert Biological Systems, Andermatt Biocontrol, American Vanguard Corporation, and BASF SE, among others.

Key Market Trends

Increasing Demand for Organic Produce Driving the Market

Brazil has been witnessing a surge in the demand for organically grown produce in recent years, which has resulted in the rapid expansion of the organic farmland area from 940,000.0 hectares in 2015 to 1,188,254.8 hectares in 2018. The growing health-conscious consumer base has been opting for organic food in lieu of conventional food, in order to avoid the adverse health effects caused by chemical preservatives in inorganic food. This has driven the market for biopesticides in the country. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, and Food Supply, there were 17,075 registered organic farmers in the country in 2018, as against, 6,700 in 2013. Moreover, Karen Friederich of the Brazilian Association of Collective Health stated that agrochemicals contaminate approximately 70% of the food consumed by Brazilians. Therefore, the growing awareness about healthy food products with minimal environmental impacts is expected to drive the demand for biopesticides for use in organic farming across the country, during the forecast period.

Rapid Penetration of Newly Developed Biopesticide Products

Currently, 40 commercial mycoinsecticides present in the Brazilian market, are provided by 19 for-profit companies. In Brazil, where there is an overwhelming need to improve soil health and crop productivity, microbial science in agriculture has begun. Approximately 3.0 million ha. of agricultural cropland is treated annually with microbial pesticides in Brazil. Almost 93 bacteria-based microbial products, 22 fungi-based microbial products, and 6 virus-based microbial products had been registered in Brazil a few years ago. However, the figure has been changing positively with leading players acquiring regional companies in order to strengthen their foothold and expand product portfolios in the country. For instance, in January 2019, American Vanguard Corporation acquired the distribution franchise, Agrovant and Defensive, in order to expand access to the Brazilian crop protection market. Moreover, Koppert Biological Systems acquired Brazilian biological control company, BUG Agentes Biológicos, in a bid to strengthen its position in the macro-biological crop protection market in South America, including Brazil.

Competitive Landscape

The market for biopesticides in Brazil is fragmented with each player vying for a larger market share in the Brazilian industry. Some of the major players in the country include Marrone Bio Innovations, Valent Biosciences Corporation, Koppert Biological Systems, Andermatt Biocontrol, American Vanguard Corporation, and BASF SE, among others. The global players have been acquiring regional companies in order to expand their base and product portfolio in the country. New product launches following extensive R&D activities have been part of the strategic moves by the players. For instance, in 2018, Biovalens of Vittia Group, launched two biopesticides in Brazil, viz., Tricho-Turbo (Trichoderma asperellum BV10) and No-Nema (Bacillus amyloliquefaciens), following the marketing approval granted by the Ministry of Livestock and Supply (Mapa). In January 2019, American Vanguard Corporation acquired the distribution franchise, Agrovant and Defensive, in order to expand access to the Brazilian crop protection market.
