The Algerian fruit & vegetable market is projected to grow at a CAGR of 5.8% during the forecast period (2020-2025).The domestic fruit & vegetable market in Algeria is comparatively large, as compared to the other North African countries, like Sudan and Egypt. Apart from catering to its domestic purposes, the product is also exported to other countries. Although fruits and vegetables are exported from Algeria, the domestic need is high within the region.

Potato, tomato, and onion are the major vegetables produced across Algeria. Potatoes, Tomatoes and onion segments have been booming in recent years. According to FAO, potato production accounts for 4.6 million metric tons followed by onion with 1.39 million metric tons. In the fruit segment, watermelon dominates the Algerian market. The production of watermelon accounts for 2 million metric tons followed by oranges with 1.13 million metric tons. The trends are a clear indication that the Algerian fruit & vegetable market is going to witness healthy growth during the forecast period.

Potato Dominates the Market

According to FAO, potato is one of the major leading vegetables in the Algerian Market, The production of potatoes accounts for 4.65 million metric tons in 2018 as compared to the previous year in which the production was 4.60 million metric tons. The potato production is expected to increase in order to meet the domestic needs of the people in Algeria. For instance, annual per capita potato consumption in Algeria has increased to 65 Kg in 2018 which in turn increases the demand for potatoes, thus boosting the vegetable market during the forecast period.

High Regional Trade of Dates is Driving the Market

Though watermelon and orange accounted for around 30% of the production of the total fruit in 2018, the date is the major commercial products in the Algerian fruit segment. According to FAO, the date is one of the major fruits produced in Algeria accounting for 1.09 million metric tons of production in 2018 as against 1.05 million metric tons in 2017.

According to ITC Trade, the date export value reached 52 thousand USD in 2017 as compared to 37 thousand USD in 2016. This rapidly increasing export indicates the growth of the market. Major Algerian dates export destinations are France, Russia, and Spain. Among all the importing countries France and Russia together hold 50.6% share of the total value of dates exported from Algeria.
